A gene is a length of DNA that carries information in an organism. DNA is constructed in a double helix, like a ladder twisted into a spiral. The rings of the ladder are made of four bases - A,C,G and T. A gene is a unique sequence of these bases. No, the nucleus does not make protein for the cell. A different organelle, called the ribosome, does. The nucleus is simply responsible for storing the DNA in the cell, and is often considered the "Brain of the cell".
