They are by default - you can change it in the 'settings' option in the blue panel if you choose.
Depending on the options you selected when setting up your account, questions might be added to your watchlist automatically. To check if you are receiving updates, look in the blue sidebar on the left of the screen. If you see something that says 'Cancel updates', it meens that it is added to your watchlist. If it says 'Get updates' then it means that you are not receiving updates. Click it if you wish to get updates. Depending on the settings you have set up, you may also get certain updates in email. In the blue toolbar on the left, click on "My watchlist" under "My pages." From there, click on the rectangular orange "Edit" button. On that page, you can see all of the categories and questions that you have added to your Watchlist.

Using Your WatchlistYou can put whatever questions you want on your Watchlist. This list shows all of the questions that you wish to watch - whether you asked them, answered them, or are making sure that no one ruins a great answer. When you see a new question, you will see four blocks that you can click on. One of them says "Watch this question" which if you click on it, will be added to your Watchlist. Any changes at all that are made to that question will show up in your Watchlist, with information on when it was changed and by whom.You can also unselect questions that you wish to watch by opening up your watchlist and clicking on "Click here to change the list of Categories and questions you are watching."(See Related question on how to use your Watchlist)

Yes, anything you make changes to will automatically be added to your watchlist and you will be notified via your watchlist. If you want to be notified of a question without making changes to it, click 'add updates' in one of the green boxes next to the orange button saying "answer it".
If a question is redirected to "What questions add no value to WikiAnswers?", then it became an alternate to that question because it added no value. Questions like "Purple blue yellow ice cream?" will be merged into "What questions add no value to WikiAnswers?" because, as the question states, they do not add any value to the site.
