Well a person I know has a red heeler and its not mean at all.I think it just depends on its personality. Red/Blue Heelers are often aggressive, dominant, and very bold in my experience (I've had one for seven years). Mine is never mean, though. In fact, with our family and people she knows, she is very sweet and affectionate. They are very loyal to one person, and are very protective of every person and animal in their family/pack. All of this derives from their background as working/herding dogs. If you want a pet that is extremely devoted and loves exercise/activity, they are wonderful.

Where are blue heeler dogs from?

The heeler was a result of crossing Dingos with Collies and other sheep/herding dogs-credit is given to George Elliott who developed the breed in 1840 and they originated in Austrailia. They are excellent herding/cattle/working dogs. And they also come in red-known as red heelers, where they still have white haired roaning to their usually short coat.

What do red heelers herd?

Red and blue cattle dogs will herd anything {inluding you children} but in a working environment they herd cattle. As the name heeler suggests they are apt to bite the heels of cattle and can be quite hard in their delivery often drawing blood;so not recommended for use on dairy herds or stud stock.Strangely, here in Australia we only really refer to blue cattle dogs as "blue heelers" a name which has also passed on to refer to members of the police force

Are red heelers good with kids?

Any breed of dog can be good with children and other animals but they must be socialized properly socialized as a puppy. I personally wouldn't leave the dog alone with you're kids until you know for sure how he/she will react, but it also depends on you're kids.

Are there chocolate colored Queensland heelers?

yes there are chocolate heelers aka Australian cattle dogs. chocolate is a double ressive gene both parents have to cary the gene to produce chocolate pups. if both parents are chocolate all pups will be chocolate. if both parents are blue or red & each has a chocolate parent one third of the pups will be chocolate. heelers have quite a lot of Kelpie in them & chocolate is common in Kelpies. heelers can also be a slate blue gray as well & the same thing applies for it is also a double recessive gene. these colors are fairly rare for most breeders do not understand the genetics & how to produce it. we have raised queensland heelers for over 40 years. we are rightwayranch you can google us & see our chocolate, slate blue, blue, red, silver & sometimes white heelers.

What is the difference between a blue heeler and red heeler?

Australian Cattle Dogs and Blue Heelers are the same thing. 'Australian Cattle Dog' is it's official name, but we (In Australia) often call them blue or red heelers for the colour of their coat and their ability to 'heel' cattle. There are however 2 breeds of Bluey (we shorten everything in Aus, it's got a nickname for the nickname). One is the Australian Cattle Dog and the other is the Australian Stumpy-Tailed Cattle Dog. They look pretty much the same, except for the obvious; one has a short tail.
