A check of the Nevada Administrative Code Chapter 486 which is for motorcycles other similar vehicles did not address the issue of license plates. While some states do not restrict side-mount plate use in any form, all motorcycles are subjected to federal requirements. However, many states, and *federal law, do require that rear-mounted license plates must be securely fastened and be mounted in a position that is unobstructed, clearly visible and legible.
*Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 49 C.F.R. Subsection 571.108, Standard No. 108, all vehicles must have a source of illumination for the license plate itself.

∙ 15y agoSide mounted vertical license plates are not legal. If you want to mount your license plate to the side of your bike, it has to be visible from the rear and mounted horizontally.

Yes they are 100% legal. Because the tail end of frame is mounting location. Only one plate is requires for one side.

As of October 1, 2008, vertical mounted license plates are illegal. The fine for this is $1,000. Example: October 17, 2008 I learned of this new law, I quickly zip tied my vertical plate in a horizontal position. 30 minutes later on my way to the Iron Horse in Ormond, 2 bikes were pulled over side by side with vertical plates. The idea here is that once you are pulled for this "ridiculous" violation, officers have probable cause to examine for alcohol or other potential violations. Please be aware and take this seriously.

I'm going through this right now with a vertical mount on my Pitbull. According to ABATE, as of 6/16/09, the governor has signed the reversal of the "horizontal tag" bill that previously restricted vertical license plates on motorcycles. The unlawful speeding violations are still present in the law. The Bill as it relates to motorcycles: Section 4 Subsection 3 of the section 316.2085, Florida Statutes is amended to read: "The license tag of a motorcycle or moped must be permanently affixed to the vehicle and may not be adjusted or capable of being flipped up. No device for or method of concealing or obscuring the legibility of the license tag of a motorcycle shall be installed or used."
