Where sled dogs are used, broadly round the arctic regions, they are work dogs not pets. They stay outdoors in all weathers. As work dogs they need to be well fed, usually on raw meat. Dogs in Antarctica were always working animals, but they were otherwise untrained. There were occasions when the dogs would become loose, when they would chase the native animals that visited the continent to breed. This was natural behaviour for the dogs. It was discovered that the dogs could transmit diseases to the breeding marine animals. Based on their ability to transmit disease, and their natural instincts, dogs were banned from Antarctica. Dogs exported from Antarctica found homes with people who wanted to keep them as pets, or they were otherwise employed as working dogs in areas where working animals support transport.
