The Rottweilers breed is known to be intelligent trainable dogs. Like many smart breeds, when they like something they do, they do it well. The more you socialize and have fun with them, the more they learn. With dogs, you get out of them, what you put in. They need you to teach them acceptable behaviors, and train them. They just don't "know" things, no matter the breed. If you don't have experience training dogs, a Rottweiler may not be the best breed for you, given their large size.
Just for the record, I don't think it is fair (or correct) to compare the intelligence of different breeds. There are plenty of lists online showing the most "intelligent breeds", but I feel that they were mixing compliance with intelligence. For example, I wouldn't expect a Bloodhound to "heel" on command as a Golden Retriever would, but that doesn't mean the Bloodhound is not intelligent. Bloodhounds were bred for a different job, that's all. In my opinion, comparing dog breeds is like comparing apples & Oranges.
They're great dogs to have. They are very loyal and friendly and can easily be brought up with other animals. They're smart and easy to train if they have the right trainer. They are also very protective and are sometimes used as gaurd dogs.
Pit bulls are in a sense, one of the smarter breeds there is. Any owner could tell you about the things these dogs come up with.
