There is a special tool for removing ball joints. It is a wedged two tine fork that can be hammered into position and pulls the joint out. I guess it hasn't changed, it has been about 20 years since I changed the ball joints on a car. Yes, to avoid damage to the control arms and the mounting holes the ball joints fit in. The good news is that many of the top auto parts stores have these tools to lend or rent.
