Whether you're talking about the 7.3L IDI International Ford engine or the 7.3L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel Ford engine, they're both great. I seen a 7.3L Powerstroke van that just rolled over the 2 million mile mark. That's crazy!!! The highest mileage 7.3L IDI I've seen had 541,900 miles. My personal experience was a 1997 Ford F-350 with 7.3L Powerstroke (my work truck) and it was reliable for 450,000 miles. When I sold it, it had 450K miles. The guy I sold it to is a friend of mine, and he has kept everything stock and it is still running strong. He just hit the 500,000 mile mark.I beg to differ I own a 7.3L powerstroke and after 55,000 miles four injector sleeves cracked which resulted in the fuel getting into the coolant system. This is a very common problem with these engines which ford acknowledges but won't recall.

So far, the 7.3L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel V8. But the old 7.3L PSD is running a tight race with the 05 to 07 6.0L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel V8s. They have been proven to be reliable. The only bad 6.0L PSDs were the 03.5 and 04s. Every Ford diesel made has had some good reliability. If you get an upgraded turbo on the 6.4L and a DPF Delete Kit you are good to go for a high mileage diesel. The 6.9L IDI Ford/International diesel was a great engine. Also, the 7.3L IDI Ford/International diesel engine. The 6.9L IDI and 7.3L IDI didn't have a turbo OR great power, but they were great engines. I am liking the new 2011 6.7L Powerstroke Turbo Diesel V8 that is in the new Super Duty trucks. It seems like it will be a very reliable and long-lasting high-mileage engine. There really isn't a "best" Ford diesel now days, but the early 6.0Ls and the 6.4Ls are definetly the pieces of sh*t in this round!
