The US Virgin Islands are an unincorporated organized territory of the United States of America. That means they are a territory, and a possession, of the US. They are a self-governing territory but are not styled as a Commonwealth.

Residents of the US Virgin Islands are not subject to U.S. federal income taxes on income derived from U.S. Virgin Islands sources. They pay taxes to the territory equal to what their federal taxes would be if they lived in a state.
