Unfortunately most of them were crushed and melted down.
Many people were waiting to purchase these old military pistols and have a gunsmith rejuvenate them with a new barrel & springs.
It would have been nice.
m1911 pistol was the most commonly used side arm
age of the military 1911 is based on serial number................
your pistol was made by Ithaca Company in 1943. Value depends on overall condition...
No. Only a handful of units even have M1911s at their disposal, and almost all of them are special operations units. Not even all of the units subordinate to SOCOM have the M1911 available to them. The only way a Private in the Army would be able to carry an M1911 is if they were permitted to bring their own - and they are not. That aside, most enlisted personnel don't even get issued a pistol. I don't know if you think everyone gets a rifle and a pistol for backup, but that's not the case.
Currently the standard side arm of the US military is the 9mm M9 Beretta pistol. I know many officers that continued to carry their own .45 because of the lack of stopping power of the 9mm round used by the M9 pistol.
John M. Browning began working on, revising and perfecting the .45 caliber automatic pistol for the US military in the early 1900's. The first version was adopted for military use in 1911.
A .45 is a gun with an internal bore diameter of .45 of an inch. Generally, when people speak of "a forty-five" they are referring to a US Army M1911/M1911A1 pistol or a clone made in that style.

The Beretta M9 replaced the M1911 as the standard service pistol of the US Military. However, Glocks were used by Air Force pilots, although they're supposed to have since been phased out for the FN 5.7.
The Colt M1911 (which also saw service in the First World War) has an excellent reputation behind it. Units of MARSOC still use variants of it to this day.
"1911" refers to the US Pistol M1911 and M1911A1 handguns designed by John Moses Browning, as well as a large number of production and custom pistols based on the design made by various manufacturers. These pistols range form exact replicas of the military issue guns to highly modified guns for various types of competition. The M1911 pistol is a single action handgun, chambered in .45 ACP. The original magazine capacity is 7 rounds, with 8 round magazines being common now. The pistol uses the Browning tilting barrel breech locking system.
Under Federal government laws, the US Armed Forces took all of their surplus M1911 Colt.45 pistols, after they were replaced by a new type of pistol, and dumped them into the ocean in a very deep spot, so they could not be used by criminal.
