The easiest way is to disconnect both ends and use a multimeter on it. You can buy one for about $20. Usually though, it's not the cable that's the problem, but rather the connection between the cable and the terminal (on either end).

Check the handle is ok, its common for this to break too. Before removing the cable tie a long rope/wire to it and use this to pull the new one into position. Connecting the ends is tricky so allow 2hours for the whole job.
