According to Webster's New Essential Writer's Companion, you should not capitalize the cardinal directions or compass points, north, south, east and west. However, if you are referencing a particular part of the world, like the Middle East, or in the US, the East Coast, those should be capitalized.

e.g., I live in the South, now. Turn left down my street, and I'm on the west side of the road.

The directions -- north, east, south, west, and their combinations -- can be either adverbs or adjectives, and with capitalization, can also be proper nouns.
