The new continuous rail makes for a more comfortable ride because you don't have the noise from running over the joints. Continuous rails also do not have fish plates (metal splices that hold the sections together) that will loosen up so there is less maintenance.

Presumably you want the train tracks to support a train as well; in that case, the weight of a certain piece of train tracks, plus the total weight of the train, should be less than the weight of the water displaced by the train tracks.
