Usually a liquid, but some solids, like ice, have the molecules more spread apart, making it less dense than the liquid. If, by "loosely packed," you mean being able to slide past each other, then the liquid is always the answer.

Why can solid materials hold their shape?

Solid Materials hold their shape because the molecules are bound to each other, all solids have the ability to hold their shape when forces are applied. ** Look in your book. If you have CPO Focus on Physical Science, it is in Chapter 5 section 2 page 103 **

What is the definition for Packing of Particles?

How close together the molecules (particles) are in a substance/material. Solids are closely packed, liquids are loosely packed, and gas are very loose, freely moving molecules.

Explain the particle arrangement in solids liquids and gasses and energy associate with each phase?

Solids have closely-packed molecules, and very little energy Liquids have loosely-packed molecules and some energy, and gasses have very lose, free molecules, and very high energy.

How are liquids and gases different in the amount of space between?

Liquid molecules are very tightly packed while in gas it is loose.

Are chromosomes tightly packed DNA or loosely packed DNA?

Chromosomes are tightly packed DNA. When DNA is not tightly packed it is called chromatin. Chromosomes only exist during mitosis or meiosis.

What is solids and liquids?

Solids are a phase of matter in which the molecules are packed together and can only move together. The molecuules in liquids have some space to move... Ex of solids: rocks, hat, pencil......anything you can hold on to LIQUIDS: water, juice, soda........

Why is water's molecules loosely packed?

Why are liquids difficult to compress?

Liquids are difficult to compress because of their molecules. Since their molecules are already tightly packed together, they cannot be compressed much more. Doing so can only slightly alter their volume.
