There are no squirrels in Australia because the migration of the squirrels was not carried out because of the lack of land bridges to the country. Many years ago, there have been efforts to import and release grey squirrels into Australia but the population has died out.

∙ 6y agoSquirrels are not native to Australia for the same reason so many other land mammals are not found here: Australia is a continent surrounded entirely by water, and there was no available route for squirrels to use.Having said that, however, palm squirrels which escaped from a Perth zoo many years ago thrived in the area, with their population growing to about 1000. Fortunately, an intensive eradication program based on the fact that squirrels are very food-driven and therefore easy to trap has managed to whittle this invasive species down to less than a dozen individuals.
