India : 7-Eleven convenience stores to foray into India
March 29, 2007

KOLKATA:
Seven & I Holdings Company, world's largest chain of convenience stores, 7-Eleven, and compatriot Seibu Department Stores have plans to foray into India.

For this purpose both are on the look out for an Indian partner, as front-end retail by foreign players goes against FDI retail policy.

A delegation from Seven & I Holdings already visited India last year.

Delhi may become the first stop of 7-Eleven and Seibu, said Yoshikazu Takeuchi, former Consul General of Japan.

The Japanese company sells ready-to-eat food but not vegetables whereas Seibu is a small pop-and-mom shop.

They would be introducing Japanese homegrown products to India, he said.

Local people would be employed and wil be trained to prepare products in the Japanese way by both the companies, Takeuchi said.

7-Eleven has 31,625 stores around the world, including 11,525 in Japan.
