There are some modern ones, but to gain access to lets say newspaper articles from 1805, you will have to subscribe to various websites. The National Archives should have some, and try looking for articles from the:
New-York Observer : (New York) 1829-1912 (the Lewis and Clarke expedition would be over, but Clark would still be alive when this paper was running, so it might have his death)
