Yes one can use emoticons in the application Skype although some problems have been reported when using them with certain versions of iPad. There are a number of emoticons to show one's emotion or feeling.

But you can buy them with your credit card or Paysafecard, in case you don't own one. It's even better because it doesn't have any hidden fees. Just go the the Skype homepage and learn about their rates. I always use Skype for calling abroad, it's much cheaper then using a landline or your cellular phone.
