Science and knowledge in general are detrimental to societies who's view of civilization is based on superstition and ignorance. Astronomy would adversely impact:

  • The Flat Earth Society
  • Religions which support a young Eath/Universe
  • Supporters of the uniqueness of the Earth

I don't see why simply gathering knowledge would have a negative impact. Unless too much resources are spent on that - but in general, the tendency is rather to spend a very, very small portion of each country's resources on such things.

Science in itself has no negative effects but its depends on how one uses science for negative purposes such as its use to generate nuclear weapons, chemical weapons .

good effect - Apollo 11 reached on moon , controls on diseases , telecommunications

bad effect - pollution , earthquakes , termination of glaciers
