All of the plants and animals of the Sahara Desert are endangered by people and the environment. Plants tend to be found around the oases, which represent the surfacing of waters from extensive underground aquifers. Trees have been removed, to serve as fuel and fodder. Soil erosion, sediment pollution of the water, and air pollution are the consequences of the lack of tree cover. The oases no longer have the different vegetative layers - ground cover, understory, canopy - that are necessary for plants to survive and flourish. Additionally, development through the building of accommodations and businesses adds to air and water pollution, and contributes to habitat loss.

The temporary habitats of the Sahara which only develop following rainfall are not highly threatened by human activities (the Sahara has a vast area of large undisturbed habitat filled with mostly rock and sand). The more relentless pressures are found in areas of permanent water, or in areas where water comes close to the surface. Here, the local pressure on Natural Resources can be greatly intense. There is also an intense pressure on any remaining population of large mammals adapted to desert conditions. The populations of all large species have been greatly reduced by hunting for food, and also through hunting for sport and recreation, both are putting these creatures in risk of extinction. The Addax Antelope is now critically threatened with extinction, mainly due to intense over-hunting.

So, yes. A great deal of threats are towards the Sahara Desert,
