Bushfires are categorised according to the topography of the area where they occur.

Bushfires which occur in mountainous regions are often more intense and move faster as they head uphill, as speed increases exponentially with the gradient of a slope, and the mountain slopes have thicker bushland. These bushfires pose a greater threat to settlements in the mountains because of their high intensity and the fact that it is harder for firefighters to reach them.

Bushfires which occur on flat grassland or flat bushland move rapidly but not as quickly as those on slopes. They can be fanned by strong winds and changing windfronts, but there is usually less vegetation for them to consume. Furthermore, the terrain is more accessible to emergency vehicles, so they may sometimes be brought under control more readily, and pose less of a threat to townships.
