Okay, opinions vary. Time is one answer. Obviously once you are old enough to grow out of childish things, childhood is over for you. Or, you can say it is youth. For growing older, you outgrow childhood. Another answer is that childhood is made possible by parental protection. Without that, many children would die early, and only the strongest would survive to adulthood... like some species of animals. Childhood throughout history has been changed in length depending on things like projected lifespan and the change from an agrarian society to a more industrialized one. Typically, children today have more of a childhood... more time to be children... than they have in the past. There are now child labor laws, and fewer children are married off at very young ages without their consent. (More get pregnant at age 15, but fewer are married at age 13.)
