One of the careers you may want to look into is chemical engineering. Esentially a chemist will come to you and say " I need a way of applying an electric current through a large amount of gass" (for example) and it's your job to make it work. You might also be responsible for comming up with a method for mass producing chemicals.
These are the people that make lab equipment. It's a good feild to consider.
