It's not really that there ares more genres, it's just that music is more central to everyday life now and the genres are more specific. Like take rock-and-roll. That's what people used to call it. Now there's metal and punk rock and hard rock and soft rock and screamo and thrash and alternative and poprock. And then to narrow it down even further, under alternative falls emo, screamo, punk, pop-punk, alternrock and even more. See? Just branched out a bit more but really they don't change.
