Red blood cells are responsible for oxygen transport. They possess a haem group containing iron which oxygen will bind to and be released depending on the bloods pH. White blood cells form part of the body's immune system. There are a number of different types and have different roles, for example, in recognising particles from past infections and triggering a fast immune response or destroying bacteria.

Maybe we can put it this way:

What is more important,

- energy, so we can live,

- protection, so we can survive,

- or stopping our body from bleeding to death?

- Red blood cells

Humans cannot live without oxygen. Oxygen is vital to produce the energy we need for every action/reaction that keeps us alive. Without oxygen we would die in just a few minutes. Special molecules inside the red blood cells, called Haemoglobins, deliver the oxygen we need from our lungs (into where we breathed it in from the air) to all the cells, the tiniest parts of our body. Without red blood cells that would not be possible. The same haemoglobin molecules also, get rid of the waste, carbon dioxide, from all the cells, taking it to the lungs, from where we breathe it out. Without the red blood cells we could not do that either.

- White blood cells

While there is only one kind of red blood cell (though they might differ in size, shape, or colour intensity in certain medical conditions), here are several types of white blood cells. Regardless of that, they all are there to protect us from harmful bacteria, viruses, infections, parasites - like hook worms, and lots of diseases, illnesses. Humans would die very quickly without their protection.

- Platelets

They are tiny fragments of a special cell called megakaryocyte. They stop the bleeding whether it is caused by and injury or it is an internal bleeding. Without them, and their input (secreting some of the clotting factors, needed to stop the bleeding), we could bleed to death.

So, which one is most important? They all are.

There are more red blood cells in your blood stream than white blood cells. Approximately 25% of the cells in the human body are red blood cells, approximately 1% of blood cells are white (in a healthy adult).

Are there more white blood cells or red blood cells?

Yes, there are (according to research) in fact more red blood cells than white. If you would like to know WHY it is because red blood cells carry oxygen through out the body while the white blood cells fight off diseases. so our bodies develop more of them for more oxygen that we need but we don't really need so much white blood cells.
