You see crosses because in the Christian religion Jesus died on a cross and it is therefore now a holy symbol used frequently, it is also the Christian symbol and so many christians wear them as a sign of there faith or put them on churches and other holy places.
No one knows because they ether reused the crosses or discarded them so it could be any where.

Jesus died on the cross for our sins. After He had died because of the Preparation Day all bodies had to be removed from the crosses before sundown. The two thief's who were still alive had their legs broken so that they would die quickly as they could not push their bodies up so they could breathe. But when the Roman soldier came to Jesus, they found He had already died so the soldier stabbed him in the side with a spear.
