Only if you drop your phone a lot. iPhones in particle are known to be pretty fragile and not able to take much damage at all. With any type of smart phone you should have insurance on it though.
I have dropped my cell a couple of times, but it doesn't break.

Yes, it is very easy to use a slide up phone. You just hold it, and push up the screen. Some phone's that are touchscreen can be used without the slide out keyboard. Other phones need to be slid up so that you can have access to the keyboard.
