Apple Macs don't use valves (computers haven't used valves since around 1955). However, transistors are very much smaller than valves (by several orders of magnitude), are much more reliable, are cheaper to mass produce and offer much greater efficiency.

Why did transistors eventually replace valves in radios?

"Valve" is the British word for Vacuum Tube, so for the British (which the person asking this question probably is) transistors did replace valves. Therefore the answer remains that values(vacuum tubes) where large and bulky, in addition they require high levels of power to function and created substantial heat and were quite fragile. The creation of the Transistor and then micro chip allowed for portability, lower levels of operation power to be required and reduced costs due to mass production

What type of transistors can be used in an ECM to switch diesel engine electronic unit injectors?

ECMs use large scale integrated circuits that are usually embedded in epoxy. They do not contain discrete transistors and are generally not designed to be serviced.

What is very large scale integration?

Very large scale integration means including large number of electronic components like diodes, resistors, transistors, op-amps on a single semiconductor chip

What is a manufacturer's joint?

A seemingly LARGE joint compared to that of a gangsta joint.

Why is mainframe used in programs?

A mainframe is just a physically very large computer, it is programmed no differently than minicomputers and microcomputers. All computers were mainframe computers before the early 1960s (because of the size of vacuum tubes and the first discrete transistors), when discrete transistors and then integrated circuits made possible the smaller minicomputers. In 1971 Intel introduced the microprocessor integrated circuit making the even smaller microcomputers possible.

Are transistors bigger or smaller than valves?

Yes they are. The invention of the transistor signalled the end of large, bulky valves in circuits. Modern transistors are so small - that thousands can be housed on one microchip.

Can PNP transistors be used in place of TIP31 transistors?

No...TIP31 is NPN. The complementary PNP is a TIP32. They are both large high power (40W) devices.

Should apple be compared to Microsoft of windows?

Yes, they can be compared. They are both very large companies. They are both involved in computer technology and have a major impact on it. They have a lot in common and have always been competitors. There are lots of differences too, like Apple creating a lot of devices, while Microsoft concentrates mostly on software.

Is mercury large or small?

Compared to other planets, yes it is small. But compared to a house, no, it is very large...

What is the name of a silicon chip developed in the 1960's that contains large numbers of tiny transistors?

What is the difference between es and vlsi?

VLSI stands for Very Large Scale Integration. LSI stands for Large Scale Integration. In LSI for example a chip has 1000 transistors in 1 sq cm , then in VLSI it will have more than 1 million transistors in the same space.

What is meant by VLSI?

Very Large Scale Intregration. It basically means packing a very large number of transistors onto an integrated circuit wafer.

What were used before transistors?

If the integrated circuit in some kind of device has 5,000 transistors on it, then before integrated circuits were available, the same function might have been performed by 100 individual transistors. And before transistors were available, the same function might have been performed by 30 vacuum tubes, a fan and air system to keep them cool, and a large power system to operate the tubes and the cooler.

Which instrument has a large side and no valves in the brass family?

Trombone

Why computers in the first generation were very large?

Digital computers do not need to be electronic, but have sometimes been implemented mechanically, hydraulically or pneumatically. To be fast, computers have to be electronic and the first devices used were valves (tubes). These are relatively large, and consume around 10 watts of power each, and since thousands were needed, computers were large and needed a lot of power. Transistors were next, once they became fast enough, and computers became much smaller. The next step was the integrated circuit ("chip") which comprises hundreds, thousands, or millions of interconnected transistors made in one (small) piece. These have continued to become smaller and more complex year by year.
