from a true gamers perspective, it is my humble opinion that one drive is best. like a chain, a computer is only as fast as its slowest part. and rarely do I feel that the hardrive access time is the "bottleneck". if you have a slow video card then you will see it in the games...does having two harddrives make games run faster? possibly yes. but the difference is not huge. load times will tighten I suppose and if your dead set on extreme gaming performance then you may want a "RAID array hardware setup. which for the most part is TWO harddrives working together. it is faster, more advanced, more complicated and more expensive than just one hardrive. however if your just looking for a solid machine for games. money is better spent on a midrange hardrive and high quality videocard or processor perhaps.

so the short answer: two hardives can be setup to be faster than one and (money aside) will inevitably aid most tasks done by your computer including gaming.

yes, two hdds are better than one for the following reasons:

1. you get more capacity

2. in case of a crash, you wouldn't lose all your data

3. you have the option of installing your OS on one hdd and your games, applications etc on the other. this speeds up the system

4. you can set up a RAID config

the negative points would be that it would cost you more, power consumption will be double, but these are very minor problems

in a nutshell, yes, two hdds are definitely better than one

Why are solid state drives better than Serial ATA?

Serial ATA, otherwise known as SATA is an interface used for connecting optical drives, hard disk drives (aka hard drive), and solid-state drives to the bus adapters for a host. In other words, SATA connects computer drives to computers. Solid-state drives are computer storage devices, similar to a hard disk drive, that does not contain moving components, unlike hard disk drive that contain moving parts. Solid-state drives connect to computers using interfaces like Serial ATA. This question is similar to asking why is usb mouse better than a usb port. One is not necessarily "better" than the other because even though they work together, they both do different things. - UnrivaledShogun

Are hard drives commodities or is one manufacturer better than another?

Most hard drives are relatively the same. Some are SCSI based, most are IDE based. All manufacturers follow established industry guidelines, when creating their products and must adhere to existing agreements with computer makers. The differences are always product quality and warranty packages. Therefore some manufacturers are actually better than others.

What are the Characteristic of solid state drives?

SSD are hard drives that are almost like SD cards. They are not like the typical spinning plates hard drives. SSD stores data digitally. It also is said to have a lower life span than the spinning plate hard drives. But on the plus side, they're easy to switch out. They're still a new technology, so as we work to perfect it more, one day it may be the better option. Because they're new, they're also more expensive.
