For the US domestic automotive market, there are only two types of refrigerant systems in widespread use by the manufacturers: R12 and R134a. R12 connectors are a male Schrader type connector and R134A connectors are a quick-connect type of fitting. It doesn't matter where the car was manufactured, they almost all have either one type of fitting or the other. The exceptions are retrofits and some new vehicles may have a different type of refrigerant. R12 systems were phased out by 1995 so any car built after that should have R134a fittings.

There are some new types of A/C systems that are being considered by the manufacturers: CO2(R-744), HFC-152a and HFO-1234yf.
