The lava/magma comes from the earth's core, not usually stored within a volcano. "Dormant" volcanoes are "sleeping" Don't usually erupt, haven't for a while, and aren't expected to erupt any time soon. If a volcano is considered completely dead, the techtonic plate that the volcano was first formed on has moved, therefore cuts it off at the base. With this in mind, it still might have liquid magma within it, but would cool and turn back to rock eventually, and not able to erupt again.
