I think it is a matter of personal taste in deciding this option. I can tell you metal windows are less maintenance, generally come in several color choices, with the added bonus of painting them another color should you want to down the road.Wood windows present overall better to me personally, but again it's personal choice. However, they are more costly than metal, and they do require more care to maintain their appearance over time.
Metal grating will generally be more durable and trouble free. I would not suggest fiberglass for a good grating material.
I recently designed a two story brick colonial in PA. The second fllor windows are a few inches narrower and shorter than the first. You cannot tell this from either inside or out because of the perspective. It also makes the interior semetry much better.
