I heard not to do this because the chemicals in the fabric softner coats the fibers of the towel, making it less absorbant.

When do you add fabric softener?

you can add softener to all loads of washing but a good tip is not to add it in with your towels and cleaning cloths every time you was them, as they soak in the softener and prevent them from soaking up water when you want them too

How do you make your towels not so scratchy?

Using fabric softener when you wash them will make them less scratchy. This may not work well for the very inexpensive towels, but it should help some.

My cotton towels don't absorb water how can I fix that?

Towels absorb water because the threading on the towel is very porous. Water "likes" to "hug" porous surfaces. But when the porous surface is already occupied with water, no more can be absorbed. Your problem with the non absorbing towel can also come from a dirty towel with an ingredient absorbed into the fibers that repels water, like wax or oil. Try cleaning the towel with alcohol or any substance that can break down lipids.

How often should you wash towels?

Ideally, you should wash your bath towels within 24 hours - as the dampness remaining in the towels following a bath or shower, can - if left too long, cause the towels to become smelly, or even develop mildew. Of course follow the care labels on your towels, but it's best to wash in warm water, and without any fabric softener - which will remove the drying properties of your towels over time.

How to Keep Towels Fluffy and Fresh?

It is a wonderful feeling when you step out of the shower or bath and dry yourself off with a towel. This is especially true when the towel feels fluffy and smells fresh as you dry yourself off. The following steps will provide helpful tips on keeping towels fluffy and fresh. Step 1: Purchase large, 100 % cotton towels. Cotton towels stay fluffy and soft longer than other towels made of different material. Having larger towels will allow you to wrap yourself in the towel, along with drying off. Step 2: Since the towels are used when you get out of the shower or bath, the towels really aren't dirty. When you wash them in the washing machine, use very little or no laundry detergent while rinsing them in warm water. Step 3: Wash the towels with ¾ cups of vinegar every other load without laundry detergent. The vinegar will keep the towels fluffy and help them keep their absorbency. This is especially helpful if you have hard water. Step 4: Do not use fabric softener on the towels when you are washing them. Fabric softener places a coating on the towels which causes them to lose their absorbency and fluffiness. Step 5: Remove the towels immediately from the washing machine when done. Allowing the towels to stay in the washing machine will cause the towels to have a mildew smell to them. Step 6: When drying towels in the dryer, fluff them before placing them in the dryer. Dry them on medium heat and fluff them again right before you fold them. Step 7: After using a towel, hang it up and allow it to dry before throwing it in the laundry basket. Throwing a wet towel in the laundry basket will cause it to get a musty smell. By purchasing quality, 100% cotton towels and following these simple steps, you can keep your towels fluffy and fresh for many years. When putting away your towels in the linen closet, make sure to rotate your towels. You may also want to place an open container of baking soda in the linen closet to absorb any odors, or you may place a lavender sachet in the linen closet with the towels to give them a nice smell as you dry off.

Can towels ruin your clothes by washing them together?

In addition, washing towels separately will mean that you can wash them on a slightly higher temperature, and not cause the "fluff" from them to get on other clothes. The use of chlorine bleach with towels is best only on white towels - you can use colo(u)r safe bleach on non-white towels, or a mixture.

Why are towels getting stained in the washer?

If the stains are dark you could have grease or oil leaking somewhere in your washer. If the stains are light then DON'T USE fabric softener. If they are yellow you can go to many grocery stores and get a solution (in your detergent section) to get the yellow stains out. Once a month I run a cycle of a large box of baking soda through my washing machine (let it go through all the cycles) and that keeps built-up detergents and fabric softeners from clogging or staining your clothes and all pipings clear.

How do you make new bath towels absorbent?

Put them through a wash before using. (You should do this for almost any thing you purchase because you don't know who did what to your purchase.) All commercial textiles are treated with chemicals of one sort or another, be they chemical softeners or sizing (which keeps woven fabrics in shape while being cut/sewn), which decrease absorbency. Pre-washing is indeed a good remedy for this. Note: Dryer sheets and liquid fabric softener, although they make the towels softer and fluffier, actually make them less absorbent.
