DISADVANTAGES OF USING AUDIO AS AN INSTRUCTRUCTIONAL MEDIA IN THE CLASSROOM

Answer by JIM Tucker (St. Vincent and the Grenadines; University of the West Indies)

The biggest setback to using audio as a media in the classroom really comes down to how it is used, and not necessarily if it is used.

If it is used as a primary instructional tool/resource, these cons may result:

1. students will not learn how to read as effectively (as they listen instead of practice to read stories, poems etc).

2. they will be unable to write properly/effectively,

3. spell correctly,

4. inability to know how to extract information from text successfully

5. difficult for teachers to control device(s) use in class(affects classroom management and especially time management):

Teachers have to grow eyes in the back of their heads - and when mobile devices are used in class, the need for continual monitoring and regulation increases.

6. exposing the 'haves' and 'have nots'.

Sometimes once you introduce media use in a classroom, unless the school has the facilities to supply each student, it is sometimes the case that students are asked to bring their own device. This in turn can highlight divides between students who can afford certain devices, and those that cannot.

7. equipment failure

8. lost of instructional time due to the presenters lack of technical knowledge

9. the job of the teacher will be reduced. As we know, students need the teacher's input in order to understand some information. However, when teacher uses audio, most the time, the students may need to clarify something their understanding of the material. In the absence of the instructor, the audio will continue without such important clarifications thus amplifying misunderstanding.

10. the training that is required for teachers of all levels in order to become skillful to create and distribute these audio may be missing

11. may be time consuming in terms of preparation and time spent learning new technologies

12. the need for back-up plans

13. anxiety for professors/presenter's

14. increases attention deficit (Some students may hear but not listen).

15. the pace of the recited material may not be appropriate for all students as these often have varying experiential backgrounds and attention span ranges

16. may present difficulties in accessing or selecting specific segments

17. possess the potential for accidental erasing

SPECIFIC DISADVANTAGES:

1. AUDIO TAPES

A. FIXED SEEQUENCE:

These fix the sequence of the presentation

B. DIFFICULT TO SCAN:

(as compared to text, therefore no hard copy to encourage reading , unless typed)

C. DIFFICULTIES IN SELECTING SEGMENTS

D. CAN BE ACCIDENTALLY ERASED QUITE EASILY

(by magnets as well as human error)

2. COMPACT DISCS

can be easily damaged.

3. MP3

Allows user to customize audio formatting which might incur copyright violations.

Which president misspelled tomato?

Dan Quayle was said to have spelled potato as potatoe The potato incident actually did take place June 15, 1992 in a school in Trenton and was recorded for posterity and then-Vice President Dan Quale's eternal embarrassment. In his 1994 memoir, Standing Firm, Quayle devotes a whole chapter to the events in a classroom at Trenton's Munoz Rivera School - and the impact of them on his career. In the book, Quayle said he knew little about his visit to Trenton, other than it was to help spotlight the city's Weed and Seed program, which provided anti-drug education to grade school-children. When he got the Munoz Rivera School, Quayle spoke with some women involved in the program, before being hustled off by his aides to another classroom for a staged spelling bee. According to his autobiography, Quale asked Keith Nahigian, an aide, what he was supposed to do and was told that he should merely read words off some flash cards for the children to spell on the blackboard. Nahigan confirmed that the words had been checked, informing Quale: "We looked at them and they're just very simple words. No big deal.'' Enter William Figueroa, 12, a sixth-grader from the Mott School in the South Ward who had been bussed to Munoz Rivera to take part in the vice presidential event. With cameras rolling, William was given the word potato to spell and he proceeded to write the word correctly on the blackboard. In the footage Quale can be seen looking at the blackboard, then at his contest card, and gently and quietly, but quite audibly, telling William, "You're close, but you left a little something off. The e on the end. " Quale wrote in his autobiography: "So William, against his better judgment and trying to be polite, added an e'' and won applause for it from those assembled in the classroom, including Mayor Doug Palmer." The misspelling wasn't mentioned until the end of the press conference after the event, when one reporter asked Quayle, "How do you spell potato?''"I gave him a puzzled look, and then the press started laughing. It wasn't until that moment that I realized anything was wrong,'' Quayle wrote.

Can you use the word aide to describe a document?

Probably not!* The word aide means an assistant.* An aide-de-camp (French, meaning camp asistant) is the military title for an officer acting as a confidential assistant to a person of high rank, or, in some countries it is the title (i.e. ADC) of a person of honor. However! An aide-mémoirecan even be an object that will remind you of something you must do.Some people tie a knot in their handkerchief to remind them that they have to do something important. This is not always effective, because, whilst seeing the knotted handkerchief may remind them that they have to do something, it doesn't always help them remember precisely what they should be doing!Examples of aides-mémoires# shopping lists # notes of personal names (at parties) # writing down anything that you might forget, so that you can readily look at it and remind yourself (you could even write an aide-mémoire on the back of your hand!)# speech notes (for a wedding speech etc) # notes of key points/facts/figures, to help when studying, or when revising for exams. # a script for a play, carried by an actor in case he forgets his lines! # a note of someone's address and details of how to get there, that you might need to refer to while you are trying to find the place # a written version of a sentence in a foreign language. that you have been practicing. You might wish to say it from memory, without notes. But just in case you forget, you'll have it written down and you can look at it and remind yourself of what to say.# a few short notes of what to say or ask at a job interview, and reviewed some minutes before entering the interview room!
