The Longest Day is the best-known film dealing with the Normandy Battle, or D-ay as it is popularily called. I mean D-day.
Normandy is the site of the D-Day invasion beaches where Allied forces landed in June 1944. Most of the soldiers killed that day and in the subsequent battle for Normandy are buried there. 'The Longest Day' and 'Saving Private Ryan' are two films which depict the battle.
June the 6th 1944 where allied forces landed in Normandy , France with the purpose of defeating Nazi Germany and freeing Europe .
The invasion of Normandy's codename was Overlord
The longest day of the year occurs in the Northern Hemisphere, around June 21st, known as the summer solstice. This is when the North Pole is tilted closest to the sun, resulting in the most daylight hours of the year.
"The Longest Day" film was based on the book by Cornelius Ryan, which detailed the events of D-Day, June 6, 1944. The book provides a thorough account of the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II.
That's a huge question. I suggest you get your hands on "The Longest Day" by Cornelius Ryan, which is the best starting place to understand the Normandy invasion. From there, go on to "D-Day," by Stephen Ambrose and "D-Day: Voices From Normandy" by Robin Neillands. Also excellent is "Nothing Less Than Victory: An Oral History of D-Day."
Normandy Beach was divided up into five or six different landing sites. The longest one to take was Omaha Beach. It took them 9 hours and many casualties occurred during those hours. The other beaches the Americans landed on were easier and quick to capture. The Brits fared better with their landings.
I highly recommend you see these three movies to learn about the soldier's viewpoint of the Normandy Invasion/D Day. See Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan and The Longest Day. You can probably check them out of the Library for free.
