The need for recourses to modernize Japan was ultimately the most prevalent cause of Japan's occupation of East Asia in World War 2. Before WWII Japan did not have major industries and therefore could not facilitate the large scale construction that the Meiji government intended in its attempts to westernize. Due to this, they colonized China and South East Asia that had an abundance of natural recourses that could be used used both back in Japan and to trade with other countries. After Japan's defeat by the US, industry was established due to the large amount of manufacturing that was required for to the Korean War, thus establishing Japan's as an automative and technological manufacturing powerhouse rather than a militant state.
