What did Joseph Smith have to do with manifest destiny?

Manifest Destiny was a term coined in the early part of the nineteenth century to describe the notion that the United States would continue to expand until it reached the Pacific coast. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on the other hand, moved west primarily to preserve its security and grow as a people. The emmigration of the church was only one of several westward movements that helped fulfill the idea of Manifest Destiny. As each group moved west, the borders of the nation expanded to include new populations of Americans who were seeking their fortunes in a new land.

Why did the manifest destiny started?

Manifest destiny meant that it was the God-given right for Americans to settle the land from sea to shining sea. It was the "responsibility" of Americans to gain the valuable natural resources that the land had to offer. Manifest Destiny took place from about 1820-1860, and then Homesteading began. Americans moved west from all different lifestyles, places, and even countries to obey "God's Command", to pursue religious freedom, and sometimes just to do something new, daring, exciting, and adventurous. The new settlers migrated mostly in covered wagons called "Prairie Schooners". The men, women, and children walked most of the time to help save the oxen's strength. Pioneers endured harsh conditions and left behind their former lives to pursue manifest destiny. Although there are many accounts of the hardships that the settlers faced, they were causing hardships for another group of people. The Native Americans had to face new diseases and new people on the land that was always theirs. They were forced off of their land so that manifest destiny could be continued. Manifest destiny was helped along by the Oregon Trail, the Railroad, Mountain Men, The Independence of Texas and the war with Mexico. What the people involved in manifest destiny did so long ago has helped shape who we are as a country today.

Who benefited from the Manifest Destiny?

The idea that manifest destiny was responsible for growth in territory and or intercontinental railroads is a myth. In the US people sought gold in California. The government offered free land to homesteaders for national interest, not because of any "destiny". It was good chatter for newspapers, but I dare say anyone living in New York City moved to Oklahoma on the basis of manifest destiny. War with Mexico was not based on US president Polk having a vision from God. And the Mexican government did not fight to regain Texas because of religion.

Was Manifest Destiny good for the US?

Yes, it gave lots of land and resources so many Americans moved West. It helped to expand our country a lot. Even though there was some tragic losses for the Native Americans, the United States' borders were literally "sea to shining sea" stretching from Atlantic to Pacific which opened up many trading possibilities.
