Manifest Destiny was a term coined in the early part of the nineteenth century to describe the notion that the United States would continue to expand until it reached the Pacific coast. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, on the other hand, moved west primarily to preserve its security and grow as a people.
The emmigration of the church was only one of several westward movements that helped fulfill the idea of Manifest Destiny. As each group moved west, the borders of the nation expanded to include new populations of Americans who were seeking their fortunes in a new land.
