ironclad ships
inconclusive
The answer to that is the south.
Ships that were plated with iron. Famous ones are the Merrimack and the Monitor. The invention of the ironclad scared Europe, seeing they did not have that technology. Cannon balls just bounced off of the ships. The south came up with these first, but then the North made a better version with 40+ patented items, including the rotating turret.
The South Ironclad refers to various ironclad warships used by the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. The most famous example is the CSS Virginia, formerly known as the USS Merrimack, which participated in the Battle of Hampton Roads in 1862. The South Ironclads played a significant role in changing naval warfare tactics during the Civil War.
