At 100,000 miles, 10 years, or after inspecting the belt you determine it needs replacing due to cracks, fraying, or stretching to the point it is loose.

The Prizm has a timing CHAIN, not belt. The timing chain does not get replaced on a scheduled interval. It should never need to be replaced. The serpentine belt, however, does need to be replaced. Inspect the belt for cracks and glazing, and replace. It is not a difficult DIY job. It is easiest to do it from under the car, after removing the splash pan.

It is squealing because it is loose or worn out. Tighten it and if that does not help, replace it. If it is a serpentine belt, just replace it and check to make sure the idler tensioner is working properly.

Since its a 1.8 liter engine FWD vehicle, I'd say its got a serpentine belt to run an air compressor/alternator/steering pump, etc. I'd say yes, but dont forget about the hidden timing belt, replace every 60K miles.
