Ethnography, deriving from the Greek works ethos (for people or folk) and graphis (for writing), is a method of research set to explore culture and paint a picture based upon case studies or fieldwork. An ethnographer can either participate directly or indirectly with the participants in the study and the study is done over an extended period of time as well as using a variety of research techniques.

An ethnography is typically written at the conclusion of immersive fieldwork that involves participant observation, interviews, and other methods to understand a specific culture or social group. The researcher spends an extended period of time in the field to gather rich data and insights for the ethnography.
