My 98 A4 Quattro 2.6L alarm goes off if I have even the window cracked, or the sunroof cracked. It's because these cars have interior motion sensors that set off the alarm in addition to exterior. My theory is that cars driving by create a vibration similar to a loud truck driving by a sensitive exterior alarm and setting it off, and trips the interior sensor.

I am doing research as to my Girlfriends car (Audi A6 1998) alarm keeps going off at any time it wants to (morning, noon and night) Some say that the horn has a backup battery that is getting low. I am not sure how to change this yet, but a tell tale sign is that the hazzards do not flash when it goes off. hope this helps
