X - 8 = 12 + 8 +8 X = 20 20 gallons were in the tub to start
fill the gas tank with air and try to start while u are trying to start it..
change the fuel filter as it might have got plugged up and if it still won't start there is a schrader valve on the fuel rail that you might have to bleed as there could be a air lock in the fuel line.

The 1997 Ford Escort Owner Guide shows 12.7 gallons ( U.S. )
Assuming you mean gallons of gasoline, the fuel gauge may not be accurate. It may read empty but in fact it may be still half full.
well i think the average is about 2 gallons a day. if your are still are uncertain try phoning a doc to see what they say?
Not likely unless that gallon of fuel had lots of water in it. Try starting it with starter fluid. If it starts and dies then you know it is a fuel problem. You then pump all the fuel out of the tank, add a a can of HEAT and then 10 gallons of fresh fuel. Replace the fuel filter and start it with starter fluid. You may have to start it several times to get the fresh fuel to the engine.
