Baby horses are actually called 'foals'; a girl foal is called a 'filly'; a boy foal is called a 'colt'. When a foal is born it is covered in slime and blood (from the mom). Once this is cleaned off the foal will teach itself to stand up (this does not take long). A foal will look like a tiny horse with large eyes and tiny legs. They also won't look as chubby as the average adult horse. When a foal is young, and still drinks it's mom's milk it is called a 'weanling'. Once it is a year old and a little but bigger it is called a 'yearling'. I believe after they are 2 years old they are considered a horse; so girls become 'mares' and boys become 'stallions' or 'geldings' (a gelding is basically a 'fixed' horse). Someone should look this over to make sure I got all the facts right.

Foals tend to be "all legs" when they're newborn until they reach a year old, and are noticeably distinctly out of porportion compared to a mature horse. They tend to change in body-to-legs porportionally, so that the body becomes longer, deeper, and wider as they get get closer to maturity. They also seem to grow a more longer neck as they get older, the muzzle gets longer, and the mane and tails fill in more.
