Finny died from a broken leg because he/she wasn't able to run or get to it's food bowl/water bottle.
Finny understands the joke about the war because he often uses humor as a defense mechanism to cope with the reality of the war. By making light of the situation, he is able to distance himself from the horrors of war and maintain a sense of control and positivity in his life. Additionally, Finny's carefree and optimistic nature allows him to find humor even in the darkest of circumstances.
Finny had fallen from a tree and severely injured his leg, leading to the discovery of a genetic condition that prevented him from being able to join the military. The phrase "Then you saw him yourself" refers to Gene witnessing the accident that led to Finny's injury.
Brinker barges into Finny and Gene's room after campus hours and forces them to go with him. He brings them to the assembly room that he was able to open using the keys he had from the school. Deuces, I'm out.
Finny's response to his injury is almost as if it doesn't effect him at all. He plays it off as if it's nothing. Finny sees it just as an unfortunate accident. He also says that he doesn't remember the details, which makes sense because Hebrew focused on the fall, but at the same time he also hinted at a feeling he had. In his gut he feels that Gene had something to do with it since he was the last thing he say before falling into the river. This is believable in this situation, he usually jumped of the limb perfectly. Gene later has an epiphany about Finny and himself. Funny wants him to succeed an he never did anything to keep Gene behind in school or anything else for that matter. All along Gene thought that he was in a competition with Finny to be the best, but Finny proved him wrong. This made Gene feel inferior because he is not a big enough person to admit the same. Finny always had a hint of this attitude. He has told Gene before that a game is just a game, and nothing more. He didn't want to keep Gene back from doing well in school. Funny also exposed his true feelings to Gene the night they slept at the beach, something that Gene would never be able to do. Finny never really had a competitive side toward anybody but himself. His actions and feeling about his injury further express that. His lack of anger hinted that he was content about everything he had already accomplished in his life so far.
Finny's separate peace in the novel "A Separate Peace" is a state of innocence and freedom that he creates for himself at Devon School. It represents his ability to stay unaffected by the war and the constraints of society. Finny's separate peace is disrupted when Gene's jealousy leads to a tragic event that shatters their friendship and Finny's sense of peace.
