Windows 7. I know that wasn't one of the choices, but unlike the two you named it's actually still supported.
A significant amount of old software written for XP and earlier has problems with Vista. If you need to run legacy software from the 1990s or very early 21st century, XP may be the better option. Also, Vista is severely crippled with less than 2 GB of main memory (and is much happier with 4 or more), so if you have equally archaic hardware XP may be your only option.
Everyone hated Vista for both of these reasons, but on modern hardware running modern software it's okay ... but if your hardware can run Vista it can almost certainly run 7, and 7 is significantly better.
