The entertainment between the two peoples differed greatly. The Greeks were more into discussions and conversation at their symposium. The Romans on the other hand preferred visual entertainment such as musicians, dancers, jugglers at their dinners. (This is not to say that the Greeks did not have this type of entertainment, but a loose comparison of the two cultures) Tragedies were popular in Greek theater also sophisticated comedy while the Romans liked bawdy, earthy comedy and perfected the art of the mime. The Greeks did not have gladiatorial combats, the Romans did.

The actors were free citizens of Athens, and, though the consequence of violence could be depicted, showing the act of violence was strictly prohibited. Roman theater was commercial, the actors were slaves, and violence was explicitly depicted. Also, women may have appeared on Roman stages, at least in comedies.
