Well, bikes can be built for belt drives. It's been done several times, mostly as one-off builds for various promotional purposes. Replacing the sprocket and chainwheel with matching belt wheels is a fairly simple matter. More challenging is the fact that for an ordinary design the chain is actually passing through the frame, and chains are much more easily opened and closed than a drive belt is. This means that a belt drive bike must either have a chainstay/seatstay that can be opened, or a frame with a somewhat different design.
