The Pohutukawa tree, Metrosideros excelsa, or "New Zealand bottlebrush" as it is known in South Africa, is a Category 3 declared plant in South Africa under the Conservation of Agricultural Resources Act, No. 43 of 1983, amended in March 2001.Category 3 Declared Plants must not be propagated and must be prevented from spreading, but do not have to be removed unless they are within 30 metres of a waterway's 1:50 year flood line.Pohutukawa was introduced to the Western Cape province of South Africa as an ornamental tree. The wind spread seed of the Pohutukawa is allowing it to invade areas of nearby fynbosecosystem, which has led to this classification.
