In most cases if a CD has some small scratches on the front from the center towards the edge (radial) it will be fine. The problem comes with scratches that go around the CD (Circumferential Scratches). Typically CD's will take a lot of mistreatment on the front face. However if the Laser in the CD player cannot see through from the front to the data track it will jump or worse still fail to play. You may be interested to know that the actual data is usually printed from the back of the CD rather than the front. Its then protected by a layer of plastic and finally the label.
